The Barbarians today congratulated Gareth Edwards on his award of a Knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
The former Wales and British & Irish Lions scrum half is synonymous with the Barbarians after scoring one of the greatest tries of all time in the invitation side’s famous victory over New Zealand in 1973.
Edwards appeared for the Barbarians on 11 occasions between 1967 and 1977 – and against them in the colours of Cardiff – but it was his role in the 23-11 win over the All Blacks on January 27, 1973, that captured the imagination of fans around the world.
Barbarians President Micky Steele-Bodger said: “This is a richly deserved accolade and the Barbarians are proud of our long association with one of rugby’s greatest players. Gareth Edwards was a wonderful player and is a wonderful man to be with.
“That 1973 game, that move and that try introduced so many across the world to rugby and it continues to inspire players and supporters more than 40 years on.”
