David Young

David Young was born in Aberdare on 26 July 1967 and won his first cap for Wales against England in the 1987 World Cup quarter-final at the age of 19. He went on to become his country's most-capped prop with 51 and captain in 12. In 1989 he played in all three tests for the British Isles when they won the series against Australia and two further tours with the Lions took his Lions' total to 18 games. Having started his club career with Swansea he moved to Cardiff in 1988 before playing rugby league for six seasons. He achieved a notable double by also captaining Wales in the 13-a-side code. On his return to union in 1996 he eventually led Cardiff for four seasons. His seven games for the Barbarians included the matches against New Zealand in 1989 and Australia in 1988 and 2001; he also captained Wales against the Barbarians in 2001. In 2002 he became director of rugby for Cardiff and then Cardiff Blues and he was coach of the Barbarians on the summer tours of 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2013. He was appointed director of rugby at London Wasps in June 2011. David Young is the father of Thomas-Rhys Young [q.v.].
