Nigel Christopher Starmer-Smith

Nigel Christopher Starmer-Smith was born in Cheltenham on 25 December 1944 and educated at Magdalen College School and Oxford University where he gained Blues in 1965 and 1966. He played for the University against Australia in 1966, for the South of England against New Zealand in 1967, and for London Counties against South Africa in 1969 and Fiji in 1970. He played club rugby for Harlequins and at county level for Oxfordshire and Surrey. Between 1969 and 1971 he gained seven caps for England. In 1970 he captained the Barbarians against Penarth. Originally a teacher at Epsom College, he later became a television commentator. In 1977 Nigel Starmer-Smith wrote the third of (to date) four official histories of the club,"The Barbarians".
