Thomas Pleydell Bedford

Thomas Pleydell Bedford was born in Bloemfontein on 8 February 1942 and educated at Christian Brothers College and Oxford University. His three Blues between 1965 and 1967 included the captaincy in his final year. In South Africa he played 119 times for Natal, including two games against the British Isles in 1968 and 1974 and against New Zealand in 1970. In England he played club rugby for Richmond. He returned to South Africa to work as an architect. His 25 tests as a flanker and No 8 for South Africa between 1963 and 1971 included three as captain. In 1967 Tommy Bedford captained the Barbarians against Newport.
