Martin Osborne Johnson

Martin Osborne Johnson was born in Solihull on 9 March 1970 and educated at Welland Park School and Robert Smyth School. In 1989 and 1990 he played in New Zealand for King Country before returning to England and played 362 games for Leicester Tigers until his retirement in 2006; he also captained the club from 1997 to 2003. Considered one of the finest locks to play international rugby, he captained England in 39 of his 84 internationals between 1993 and 2003, including the triumphant Rugby World Cup campaign in Australia in 2003. In 1993 he joined in the British Isles tour of New Zealand as a replacement for W.A.Dooley [q.v.] and played in four matches, including the second and third tests. He subsequently captained the Lions on their tours to South Africa in 1997 and Australia in 2001, playing a total of 11 games, including six tests. In 2009 Martin Johnson became manager of England and was in charge of the squad at the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
