Herbert Waddell

Herbert Waddell was born on 19 September 1902 and educated at Glasgow Academy and Fettes College. He played at fly-half for Glasgow Academicals and between 1924 and 1930 gained 15 caps and scored 45 points for Scotland. In 1924 he toured South Africa with the British Isles and played in 15 matches including the three tests. He captained the Barbarians against Cardiff in 1927. A distinguished administrator, he joined the Barbarians' committee in 1926 and in 1973 became the Club's fifth President. He also served as president of the Scottish Rugby Union, vice-president of the South African Rugby Board and was a representative on the IRB. He was the father of G H Waddell [q.v.]. Herbert Waddell died on 5 January 1988, aged 85.
